Nguzo Nature Club is a culturally grounded environmental education and youth leadership program that helps children build a stronger connection to themselves, their community, and the natural world.

Through hands-on science, outdoor exploration, African-centered learning, mindfulness, creativity, and community stewardship, participants discover that caring for the Earth is also a way of caring for one another.

Nguzo Nature Club connects the seven principles of Kwanzaa, known as the Nguzo Saba, to environmental education and everyday life.

Participants explore nature while developing confidence, leadership, cultural pride, teamwork, responsibility, and a sense of belonging.

The program was created to ensure that Black and Brown children can see themselves, their histories, and their communities reflected in outdoor education.

Young people do not only learn about nature. They learn that they are part of nature and have the power to protect it.

The Seven Principles in Nature

Umoja — Unity

We are connected to one another and to the natural world.

Participants learn how plants, animals, water, soil, and people depend on each other. Through cooperative activities, they practice teamwork, trust, and collective care.

Kujichagulia — Self-Determination

We define ourselves and speak for ourselves.

Participants explore identity, develop their voices, make responsible choices, and learn how they can become environmental leaders in their communities.

Ujima — Collective Work and Responsibility

We work together to solve community problems.

Participants take part in service projects, garden maintenance, cleanups, composting, water protection, and other activities that strengthen their neighborhoods.

Ujamaa — Cooperative Economics

We support and sustain our communities.

Participants explore recycling, reducing waste, community gardens, local food systems, resource sharing, and ways communities can create sustainable solutions together.

Nia — Purpose

We use our gifts to improve our community.

Participants identify what they care about and discover how their talents, interests, and ideas can support people, animals, and the environment.

Kuumba — Creativity

We leave our communities more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited them.

Participants use art, storytelling, design, science, and imagination to create solutions for environmental challenges.

Imani — Faith

We believe in ourselves, our communities, and our ability to create change.

Participants reflect on what they have learned, celebrate their growth, and recognize their power to protect the Earth for future generations.

Who We Serve

Nguzo Nature Club is designed primarily for elementary and middle school students, with lessons that can be adapted for older youth.

Programs can be delivered as a single workshop, a multi-week series, a summer program, an after-school club, or a customized community experience.

Why Nguzo Nature Club Matters

Many children live near parks, rivers, gardens, and other natural spaces but may not always feel welcomed, represented, or connected to traditional environmental programs.
